Sedation or Local
Anesthesia – Your Choice
Patients may choose to be sedated or to be
awake during an abortion procedure. If you
choose to have a calming sedation which also
effectively controls pain and discomfort, we
offer IV twilight sedation, also referred to as
conscious sedation.
Because of the amnesiac qualities of the
medication, you may find that you have very
little memory of the surgery. Yet, unlike
general anesthesia (completely asleep), which is
not safe if you are not in an operating room,
you will be able to return to your normal
activities within a day after your procedure is
complete. If you choose to be sedated, you must
bring a driver with you who will remain at our
facility the entire time you are here.
If you do not choose sedation, we will use a
local anesthesia to “numb” your cervix during
the procedure. In fact, all patients, whether or
not she chooses sedation, will have her cervix
anesthetized with an injection of a numbing
medication. You may drive yourself home if you
do not receive twilight sedation.
