Abortion - 15 Weeks
Surgical Abortion 12 to 15.9 weeks
A second trimester surgical abortion can be
performed from 12 to 15.9 weeks of pregnancy
(count from the first day of the last period,
verified by ultrasound dating). As with all
abortion procedures, we treat all patients with
individual, personal care. We encourage you to
bring someone with you to accompany you and
provide helpful support throughout the process
(if you desire).
After our pre-operative health check, our warm,
courteous professional healthcare team will
educate each patient extensively on the
benefits, risks of this procedure and options to
the procedure.
Depending on your medical history, medical
condition and how far advanced your pregnancy,
you may require a two-step procedure. The two
steps may be done in one day using either
medication to soften and dilate your cervix
and/or a fast-acting dilating device that can be
inserted into your cervix to dilate the cervix
and start the procedure gently and safely. After
which, you will wait at least 2 hours while the
medication/dilating agent works.
However, you may require a 2-step 2-day
procedure wherein a slower acting dilating
device will be used to dilate your cervix gently
and safely overnight. You will be asked to go
home and return the next day to complete the
abortion process.
After your work-up and medication and/or
dilating device, you will be given medication to
help you relax and to decrease nausea (if you
desire). If you desire sedation, please bring a
driver with you who will remain at our facility
the entire time you are here. After sedation,
you will not be able to drive safely for several
hours.
Surgical Procedure from 12 to 15.9_weeks
Our Obstetricians and Gynecologists perform this
procedure by a method known as suction
dilatation and curettage (D&C). During this
procedure, medicine is injected to numb the
cervix. The cervical canal is very gently
dilated with sterile dilators and the uterine
contents are gently removed with sterile,
one-time-use disposable plastic uterine
curettes. It is normal to experience cramping
during and/or after the procedure as the uterus
contracts, though this sensation is decreased
with IV twilight sedation. The cramping is
similar to menstrual cramps and can vary from
light to heavy in intensity.
The actual procedure takes between 2 to 5
minutes, depending on your medical condition.
Our Physicians will take an extra step and do a
post-operative examination of the tissue to
further ensure patient safety and the successful
completion of the procedure.
Please also remember that your abortion
procedure is not a simple one-step act, but a
series of steps which lead up to a complex
medical procedure. So, for quality care, and as
with all surgeries, expect to be at our facility
for 2 to 3 hours prior to the procedure for
diagnostic testing, education and
pre-medication. The entire process is usually
completed, from your arrival to your dismissal
from the recovery room, in one four-to-five hour
visit unless you require a 2-day procedure.
